JLn the last 25 YEARS morc Americans
were burned to death than were killed
in the Civil War and the first World War
combined. It has been estimated that there
is fi fire somewhere in the United States
every 20 seconds.
Such facts as these, coupled with thfcurrent
ban on new construction, rising
insurance rates and the memory of such
terrible fires as the Coconut Grove disaster
in Boston and the Wyncoff hotel fire in
the south have made theatremen acutely
conscious of the values of treating the
draperies and other fabrics used to give
their interiors the luxury appearance which
is so desired.
Among other compounds which have been
produced in recent years is Flamort with
fire retardants which are patented dry
compounds. Mixed with water, they are
sprayed on unpainted wood, fabrics, paper
or other combustible materials to make
them flame-resistant. The heat of the fire
liberates non-irritating, non-toxic gases
which dilute and cool the products of combustion
to below their spontaneous ignition
point. At the same time a glaze and
char-like coating forms on the area contacted
by the flame. Thus the material
which has been impregnated repels flame.
Due to this double action the tendency to
smolder is eliminated.
Smoldering is the dreaded afterglow
feared by every fire fighter. A glowing
cigaret stub dropped on a carpet or a burning
match dropped on an automobile seat
or bed cover cannot start a fire if the
carpet, upholstery or bed cover has been
treated with such liquids as Flamort.

treated. For this reason many lumber mills
are now treating the raw lumber by immersion
into a Flamort bath so that houses,
barns and other buildings are fireproofed
even before construction. After the solution
has dried, the color of the original
wood returns, and except by actual testing
there is no way to determine by outward
appearance which areas have been treated.
Water soluble wood stains or dyes may
be added to the Flamort solution. Most
good rug shampoos and tints can be combined
with Flamort for textiles, so that a
combination of flame and mothproofing
can be accomplished.
Plamortized textiles have to be retreated
when washed with water, but not when dry
cleaned.
