Diimors that a jury trial will result in one
of the suits brought by distributors
against a local theatre group have been
heard in the federal building. If so. this will
delay the case until spring and will be one
of the few trials of its type in the business
in the country, according to information
along Filmrow . . Active campaigning has
Theatremen Charged With
Operating Lottery
NAMPA, IDAHO — Richard Conley, manager
of the Fox Majestic and Adelaide theatres
here, has been charged by three Nampa
businessmen with operating a lottery in conjunction
with a drawing held at his theatres.
The complaint was the outgrowth of a promotional
event in which city theatres were
participating. Drawings were set for each
Thursday with $100 in cash to be awarded.
At the end of a sLx-week period, a new Ford
was to be given away. Thirteen merchants
were cooperating with the theatres by giving
free tickets to the drawings for each $1 worth
of merchandise purchased. The complaining
businessmen were not among the group cooperating.
Conley pleaded innocent to the
charges and the case was set for December 12.
Conley and William Lees, owner of the Pix
Theatre which was also taking part in the
drawings, said they had secured the approval
of the county prosecuting attorney before
starting the event. They said the drawings
could not be considered a lottery because
merchants would give tickets to anyone asking
for them, regardless of whether purchases
had been made.
