V^ARPETiNG REPRESENTS a Substantial
investment in beauty for any theatre.
Probably no other single item does more
to create the necsssary atmosphere of luxury
and elegance in its decor. Since maintaining
both a beautiful and comfortable
house has become so essential, the question
is often asked by managers—what can
I do to ksep my carpeting looking as good
two years from now as it does today? What
can I do to increase its life, its serviceability?
Once carpeting has been laid on a floor,
its durability and ultimate value depends
largely upon the attention it receives. Like
a suit of clothes, it must be kept clean,
for dirt is a carpet's worst enemy.
DAILY VACUUMING VITAL
At least once a day all carpeted areas
should be given a thorough vacuuming.
Where areas are heavily traveled, it is advisable
that this be done following each
performance when possible. Dirt and dust,
if allowed to remain in a carpet, will grind
and embed itself into the pile, cutting the
fibre at the base of the carpet. This, of
course, reduces carpet life.
Though simple maintenance can be performed
from day to day by the theatre's
own crew it is advisable for the manager
to find and establish confidence in a good
local cleaning establishment. No one can
advise better and do more to help the theatre
manager get real dollar value out of
his carpeting purchase than the professional
cleaner. It is wise to allow him to
inspect the carpet periodically and make
his recommendations. Entrust your carpet's
life to his hands. He will add years
to its serviceability and beauty.
PERIODIC INSPECTION
From time to time the local contractor
who made the installation should also be
called in for a thorough and systematic

of the entire house. He will no
doubt discover factors which may be contributing
to the carpet's rapid and unnecessary
wear.
No two areas in a theatre receive exactlj
the same amount of traffic, therefore some
parts show wear much more quickly than
others. Rather than wait until these worn
areas appear and unbalance the entire theatre
by shifting the carpeting, it is advisable
to have the local contractor inspect
the entire house at least once every six
months. His trained eye will spot sections
that may be showing wear. He will be able
to advise the best way in which to snift
the carpet and equalize its wear throughout
the entire theatre, to keep the whole
house looking the same.
Stair carpeting receives probably the
most severe wear, therefore it is advisable
to have the contractor check the condition
of the nose of the steps frequently.
If nosings
show excessive wear, carpeting should
be shifted periodically in order to insure
its
maximum wear life.
CHECK FOR LOOSENESS
Occasionally a looseness will appear
where carpet has had to be joined together
in strips. This condition should be frequently
checked. The repair job becomes
harder if you wait until the seams and
joints separate.
Some carpeting, when it has been on
the floor for a time, will develop puckers
and wrinkles, due to peculiar atmospheric
conditions. If left alone and not carefully
restretched, this bulging will cause rapid
wear in the backing as well as in the pile.
Since replacement often becomes necessary
due to excessive wear in certain heavy
traffic areas, theatre owners should allow
some additional yardage for replacement
when carpet is originally purchased. Most
manufacturers say that about five to ten
per cent extra should be included in the
original order to cover replacement needs.
