It has always been an economical policy
for projectionists to burn up stubs of
carbons and see that they are used down
to the smallest possible piece, but in the
doing of the feat is the necessity to meas-
good.
Faced with this problem, H. L. Cronkhite,
a projectionist with an active mind,
started trying to figure ways in which
these carbon stubs could be used up without
endangering the picture on the screen
in any way.
The final result, which is now available
to projectionists in commercial form, is a
carbon saver which takes any length stub,
and while it's burning it away, heats up a
fresh, full-length carbon in another paii'
of jaws. When the last of one stub burns
out, the new carbon, which is now burning
in the tail of the stub flame, drops into
place and the light continues without a
flicker.
At normal amperage the new carbon will
burn for 22 minutes. Among fellow projectionists
the first question to be asked is
if the changeover from stub to full carnutes'
burning
bon is apparent. The originator of the
new device answers with an emphatic "No."
Because the tip of the new carbon is being
immersed in an increasingly hot flame
from the tail of the burning stub, it is ac-
ure burning time with the eye in the yet
tually burning when it drops into place.
unburned length of carbon. If you stretch
Because the jaws of this carbon holder
things a little too far in your zeal, you may are made of a special heat-resisting, nonmetallic
alloy, the device has no effect on
well have light stoppage before you're
through a reel, and that situation isn't
the permanent magnet in the lamp, and
hence makes no difference in the amperage
at which the lamp burns.
• Not harmful to finest of Tctture
• Not harmful to delicate colors
• Requires no mixing or rinsing
• Leares no rings or stains
• Will not burn or explode
Factory-installed insulators on the device,
which Cronkhite calls the Cron-O-
Matic carbon saver, eliminate the need for
the insulators in any lamp. These may
be removed when the carbon-saving device
is installed.
A kit which accompanies the device provides
for accurate lateral and vertical adjustment.
For the convenience of the projectionist,
the entire post assembly pivots
out away from the heat of the lamp house
for positioning the next stub.
The saver itself is universal in its operation.
All that is necessary to fit it to any
standard lamp is to specify the make of
unit in which it is to go and a base designed
to fit that lamp comes with the
saver.
