always produce a proper response, and this may prompt problems <strong>in</strong> subsequent<br />

<strong>in</strong>teraction. For example, the sender may become embarrassed or hurt, and<br />

may even lose face (Gross and Stone 1964, Goffman 1967: 5–45). Between the<br />

need to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>social</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraction and support others, and the need to look<br />

out for personal ga<strong>in</strong> and be selfish, the more likely people are to meet aga<strong>in</strong>,<br />

the more they will try to keep the <strong>in</strong>teraction go<strong>in</strong>g and help everyone ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

face. This among <strong>social</strong>ly connected people results <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>-built tendency to<br />

reciprocate <strong>experience</strong>s <strong>in</strong> human <strong>in</strong>teraction – and <strong>in</strong> MMS. †<br />
