This chapter does three th<strong>in</strong>gs: it outl<strong>in</strong>es and groups together exist<strong>in</strong>g frameworks<br />

of <strong>user</strong> <strong>experience</strong>, it reviews current research approaches to emotion<br />

and design and f<strong>in</strong>ally describes four design approaches that take <strong>user</strong> <strong>experience</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>to account <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g way. The frameworks presented here have<br />

been published <strong>in</strong> a range of different sources, but what is common to each is<br />

that they represent theoretically <strong>in</strong>formed understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>user</strong> <strong>experience</strong>.<br />

Why should we theorise about <strong>user</strong> <strong>experience</strong>? Dourish argues that philosophies<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence both the theory and practice of design and determ<strong>in</strong>e what<br />

efforts are made and what k<strong>in</strong>ds of success can be expected with the results<br />

(Dourish 2001: preface). Although Dourish focuses on <strong>in</strong>teraction and comput<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

his work has been helpful <strong>in</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>user</strong> <strong>experience</strong> as well, because<br />

both h<strong>in</strong>ge on the concept of mean<strong>in</strong>g. The philosophy was reviewed <strong>in</strong> chapter<br />

2.1 USER EXPERIENCE THEORIES AND FRAMEWORKS<br />

A number of designers and researchers have put effort <strong>in</strong>to creat<strong>in</strong>g frameworks<br />

to describe <strong>user</strong> <strong>experience</strong>; some have reviewed the work of others and some<br />

have chosen to reflect on their own work and process. In the follow<strong>in</strong>g they are<br />

organised <strong>in</strong>to three loose groups accord<strong>in</strong>g to their basic pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. The first
