3 CO-EXPERIENCE takes the most promis<strong>in</strong>g aspects of exist<strong>in</strong>g frameworks,<br />

but po<strong>in</strong>ts out their shortcom<strong>in</strong>gs: a lack of address<strong>in</strong>g how mean<strong>in</strong>g comes<br />

to be and how it changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>social</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraction. To account for this, the work<br />

builds on a framework based on symbolic <strong>in</strong>teractionism. This chapter also discusses<br />

the methodological implications that co-<strong>experience</strong> has on conduct<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>user</strong> studies and design, emphasis<strong>in</strong>g field studies, prototyp<strong>in</strong>g and empathic<br />

observations.<br />

4 PRESENTING THE ARTICLES <strong>in</strong>troduces the articles and discusses the work<br />

described <strong>in</strong> each. The articles <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> this dissertation are all published <strong>in</strong><br />

English <strong>in</strong> peer-reviewed conference proceed<strong>in</strong>gs or journals, and are pr<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

<strong>in</strong> this chapter <strong>in</strong> their entirety.<br />
