BIOLOGY
The curriculum for the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology provides a variety of
course offerings suitable for students wishing to enter industry, graduate studies
and/or research. It also meets the academic requirements for application to
most schools of medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine, where completion
of course work in a science area provides a sound background for further
study. Students should consult the catalog of their intended school for specific
prerequisite courses and consult with their advisers early in their academic careers
to plan for the inclusion of these courses to meet the specific requirements. A
minimum grade of “C” must be earned in all courses required in the major for
graduation. Required courses include all Allied Requirements. Biol 113 must be
taken at VI to ensure quality and prepare students for upper-level coursework.
A transfer student who has completed a course equivalent to Biol 113 with a
grade of B- or better at another institution may request transfer credit in writing
from the coordinator of the Biology department, but only after earning an 80 or
above on the final exam for Biol 113. The student must take the exam before the
deadline to add the course.
Teacher licensure requirements are subject to change by the Virginia Department
of Education. Programs of study are altered accordingly when changes are
deemed necessary to assure that candidates meet licensure requirements.
