Academic Program 62<br />

Before enrolling in The Keystone Project, students must have already successfully<br />

completed the following from the Foundational Skills category:<br />

• Comprehensive Studies 101, 102, 201, 302, or 303<br />

• Composition101 or 103<br />

• Composition 102 or 104<br />

The student must also complete thirteen credits from defined categories listed in<br />

the Areas of Study:<br />

• Four credits from the sciences (A)<br />

• Six credits from the humanities (B, C, or D)*<br />

• Three credits from the arts or social sciences (E, F, or G).<br />

*One humanities course may be taken concurrently with The Keystone Project<br />

These requirements ensure that the student receives exposure to various ways of<br />

knowing the world before enrolling in Comprehensive Studies 301: The Keystone<br />

Project. The Keystone Project must be attempted between the second semester<br />

of the sophomore year and the first semester of the junior year. In terms of credit<br />

hours, students must take The Keystone Project after satisfactory completion of<br />

36 credit hours but before satisfactory completion of 68 credit hours. Generally,<br />

students will take The Keystone Project during 1) the spring semester of the<br />

sophomore year, or 2) the summer following sophomore year. In some cases,<br />

students may enroll in The Keystone Project in the fall of the junior year. If a<br />

student does not pass The Keystone Project, the student must enroll in <strong>College</strong><br />

Writing 210 in the following semester. In all cases, the student must work closely<br />

with the faculty advisor to ensure timely completion of The Keystone Project.<br />

“Timely” means one to two years (two to four regular semesters) before the<br />

projected graduation date. All students must earn a C- or better in The Keystone<br />

Project in order to graduate from <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

2. Satisfactory completion of work in chosen program of study. At least<br />

half of the hours in the major must be completed at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong>.<br />

A minimum of 40 semester hours in upperdivision courses (300 and 400<br />

level) must be completed.<br />

3. Students must attend a minimum of 32 Convocation Events to fulfill the<br />

Convocation graduation requirement. The number of required events is<br />

prorated for transfer students based upon student classification at the time<br />

of enrollment.<br />
