383-READING INSTRUCTION AND INTERVENTION FOR THE YOUNG CHILD.<br />

Prerequisite: Education 101 or equivalent. This course introduces the pre-service<br />

early childhood instructor to methods for developing early childhood reading skills<br />

with concentration upon soundletter correlation, phonemic awareness, phonics,<br />

decoding, comprehension, and other reading skills. Early intervention methods to<br />

support those students needing remediation are also studied.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered fall semester.<br />

384-LITERACY AND THE YOUNG CHILD. Prerequisite: Education 101 or equivalent.<br />

This course introduces the early childhood pre-service teacher to acquisition of<br />

language skills, the development of oral and written communication skills, spelling,<br />

storytelling, basic puppetry, as well as the development and use of assessments<br />

for the P-3rd grade learner. It also includes the importance of developmentally<br />

appropriate computer-based literacy components.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered spring semester.<br />

385-ART, DRAMA, AND MUSIC ACTIVITIES FOR THE YOUNG CHILD. Prerequisite:<br />

Education 101 or equivalent. This course explores the use of art, drama, music,<br />

dance, and other activities appropriate for daily use in the early childhood<br />

classroom. The course features illustrations of ageappropriate arts and crafts,<br />

musical instruments, play equipment, dramatic play, and games designed to<br />

encourage both creativity and movement.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, two semester hours. Offered as needed.<br />

386-SAFE AND HEALTHY LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS FOR THE YOUNG CHILD.<br />

In this course, students study how to incorporate successfully public health and<br />

safety guidelines and blood-borne pathogen regulations into the early childhood<br />

curriculum. In addition, students learn to design age-appropriate indoor and<br />

outdoor classroom learning spaces to promote a positive experience for a diverse<br />

population of young children.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, two semester hours. Offered fall semester.<br />

402-CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION IN MIDDLE AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS. A<br />

study of various descriptive systems of teaching with emphasis on the secondary<br />

school curriculum and the nature of its subject matter, objectives, organization,<br />

methodology, materials and evaluation. A study of classroom management<br />

and discipline procedures will serve as a guide for establishing and maintaining<br />

a comprehensive classroom management plan. Field experience in the public<br />

schools and child abuse recognition and intervention component are also included<br />

in the course. Professional association membership required.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered fall and spring<br />
