342-GLOBALIZATION. This course examines how the world has drawn closer due<br />

to modern technology, communications and transportation. There is a special<br />

emphasis on the economic, technological, political, and ecological implications<br />

of globalization. There is much discussion of the causes and the effects of<br />

globalization. The class conducts a continual evaluation of whether globalization<br />

is a positive or a negative force for the large majority of humanity.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered fall and spring<br />

semesters.<br />

345-HONORS GLOBALIZATION. Prerequisite: Honor student or permission of<br />

instructor. This course examines the contemporary forces which have drawn the<br />

people and nations of the world into much closer connection with one another.<br />

The focus in on the implications of modern technology, international business,<br />

political interactions, ecological issues, foreign travel, and cultural exchanges and<br />

influences. Much emphasis is placed on studying the reasons both for and against<br />

the process of globalization.<br />

Credit, three semester hours.<br />

402-TOPICS IN PHILOSOPHY. This is an upper level seminar course that focuses<br />

on understanding and applying values and ethics to our contemporary world.<br />

Each semester focuses on three key issues. Students are engaged in the process<br />

of defining their own ethical position on the issues and defending their positions<br />

both orally and in writing. Students are required to clarify their own ethical<br />

positions and in so doing demonstrate their own critical thinking skills. (This<br />

course may not be taken to fulfill a core requirement.)<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours for each course. Offered as<br />

needed.<br />

PHOTOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL IMAGING<br />

The Photography and Digital Imaging major is a four-year program of study<br />

designed to prepare individuals for entry into a program of graduate study<br />

in Fine Arts and/or for career service in professional photography and related<br />

occupations. Supported by an extensive liberal arts core, instruction emphasizes<br />

the development of both visual and technical skills with program concentrations<br />

in Professional Photography, Fine Arts Photography, and Digital Imaging.<br />

All photography majors must pass proficiency exams and reviews during their<br />

study at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong>. To satisfy degree requirements, all *prerequisite<br />

photography courses must be passed with a grade of “C” or better.<br />
