139-VOCAL ENSEMBLE. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and audition.<br />
Instruction and participation in the various vocal music performance ensembles<br />
under the direction of members of the music faculty.<br />
Credit, one semester hour. May be repeated for a combined maximum of 8 hours.<br />
Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />
140-MUSIC THEORY I. Co-requisites: MUS 142 (Aural skills I), MUS 144 (Keyboard<br />
Harmony I). Fundamentals of music theory including pitch and rhythm notation,<br />
scales, key signatures, meter, intervals, triads, basic melodic construction, Roman<br />
numeral analysis, and cadences.<br />
Credit, two semester hours. Offered fall semester.<br />
141-MUSIC THEORY II. Prerequisite: MUS 140 (Music theory I); Corequisites: MUS<br />
143 (Aural skills II), MUS 145 (Keyboard harmony II). A continuation of Music<br />
Theory I, including seventh chords, inversions. Figured bass, non-harmonic tones,<br />
harmonization, part writing, advanced melodic analysis, secondary functions, and<br />
modulations.<br />
Credit, two semester hours. Offered spring semester.<br />
142-AURAL SKILLS I. Prerequisite: placement test. Co-requisites: MUS 144<br />
(Keyboard harmony I) MUS 140 (Music theory I). Fundamentals of sight singing<br />
and ear training using diatonic materials; 2:1 and 4:1 rhythms, dotted rhythms,<br />
and ties in simple and compound meters; and error detection in single voice<br />
examples.<br />
Credit, one semester hour. Offered fall semester.<br />
143-AURAL SKILLS II. Prerequisite: MUS 142 (Aural Skills I); Corequisites: MUS<br />
145 (Keyboard harmony II), MUS 141 (Music Theory II). Intermediate sight singing<br />
and ear training including decorative chromaticism and altered scale degrees, alto<br />
and tenor clefs, rhythms using triplets and duplets, syncopations, and quintuple<br />
meters. Melodic transcriptions, diatonic chord progressions including inversions,<br />
and error detection in two-voice examples are included.<br />
Credit, one semester hour. Offered spring semester.<br />
144-KEYBOARD HARMONY I. Group instruction in piano designed to help<br />
students develop the necessary skills required for the successful completion of<br />
the keyboard proficiency exam.<br />
Credit, one semester hour. Offered fall semester.<br />
145-KEYBOARD HARMONY II. Prerequisite: MUS 144 (keyboard harmony I) or<br />
permission. Continued preparation for developing the necessary keyboard skills<br />
required for successful completion of the keyboard proficiency exam.<br />
