Bootsie Comer Outstanding Character Scholarship was created in memory of<br />

Beulah Helen “Bootsie” McReynolds Comer who served as a secretary to the<br />

President for 27 years. The scholarship is given annually to a student from the<br />

Bristol region who exhibits outstanding character.<br />

Catherine Doran White Memorial Scholarship was established in 1979 in<br />

memory of Catherine Doran White by her friends and family. Preference is given<br />

to a returning female student from Connecticut.<br />

Dorothy Douglass Dickey and Helen Elizabeth Farr Scholarship is given to an<br />

outstanding student in the Performing Arts.<br />

Dr. W. C. Elliott Memorial Scholarship Fund was dedicated to the memory of<br />

Dr. W. C. Elliott who served as a trustee for over 20 years. Preference is given to<br />

students majoring in either the natural sciences or social work.<br />

Elizabeth Garland Fields Scholarship is given to a rising sophomore, junior or<br />

senior majoring in Business Administration. Preference is given to students from<br />

Appalachia.<br />

Elizabeth Saunders Metzner Memorial Scholarship, established in 1997 by Betty<br />

Jane Metzner, a trustee and alumna of the class of 1942 in honor of her mother,<br />

is awarded annually to a deserving student with financial need. A female student<br />

will be given preference.<br />

Erskine Parks Scholarship was established in 1993 with funding from the Belk<br />

Foundation of Charlotte, North Carolina and from family members. The award<br />

is for a business major with great potential for success. The recipient is selected<br />

by the President of the <strong>College</strong> with recommendations from the business faculty.<br />

Other guidelines apply.<br />

Greater Roanoke Valley Alumni Chapter Scholarship. Established in 1989<br />

through the efforts of the Roanoke area alumni, the scholarship is to be awarded<br />

to a Roanoke Valley student.<br />

Josephine Connolly Jorge Scholarship was established by Mrs. Josephine Connolly<br />

Jorge, High School Class of 1939, in memory of her mother and sister, Josephine<br />

and Mercedes Betancourt Byrne.<br />

Keesee Scholarship. As part of the Charles B. Keesee Educational Fund, the<br />

Keesee Scholars Program at VI awards grants to students as Keesee Scholars<br />

who are United States citizens and residents of either <strong>Virginia</strong>, North Carolina or<br />

South Carolina. The monetary award to Keesee Scholars shall be “need-based.”<br />

Preference is given to students who are Baptist; if funds remain available from the<br />

yearly appropriation, then scholarships may be awarded to Keesee Scholars who<br />

are not Baptist. Students must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 hours to receive<br />

the scholarship and must maintain a cumulative grade point average of “C” or<br />

higher.<br />
