Introducing <strong>Intermont</strong> 11<br />

machines (all with built-in heart monitors and personal receivers for television<br />

sound), 27-inch TV’s, a spring-impact aerobic studio, 16 Nautilus-type machines,<br />

a variety of free weights and dumbells. Additionally, the center is staffed by a<br />

certified personal trainer.<br />

J. F. Hicks Memorial Library houses a traditional print collection and also provides<br />

access to many electronic resources. The library has over 160,000 items listed<br />

in the Appalachian <strong>College</strong> Association catalog, which is shared with 26 other<br />

Appalachian <strong>College</strong> Association members. Approximately 55,000 of these items<br />

are print materials contained in the library, while online access is provided to over<br />

97,000 electronic books.<br />

Dozens of databases are available from the library’s website, which include many<br />

full-text reference sources and full-text periodicals. Off-campus access is available<br />

to VI students and faculty/staff.<br />

The library’s computers offer internet access, Microsoft Office software, and print<br />

services. Wireless internet access is available in all public areas.<br />

Library services include reference service, bibliographic instruction for individuals<br />

and classes, and inter-library loan service.<br />

The Old Manse houses classrooms and faculty offices for the English department.<br />

The Riding Center is located six miles from the main campus, just off Exit 10 of<br />

Interstate 81. Situated on 120 acres of rolling hills and stunning landscapes, the<br />

Center offers a variety of riding environments, including three arenas and the A.J.<br />

Coyle Memorial Cross-Country Course. <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> cares for 60 quality<br />

school horses for students’ use, many which are on loan from well-known barns<br />

and stables around the country.<br />

A limited number of stalls are available for the boarding of private horses at a<br />

charge of $5,000 for the academic year. Applications for a stall must be made<br />

through the Director of Equine Studies.<br />

The <strong>Intermont</strong> Photography Lab houses 2,500 square feet of laboratories for<br />

both black & white and color film processing and printing in small, medium and<br />

large-format as well as a laboratory for experimental and historical processes.<br />

Such facilities make possible a wide range of courses including work in 35 mm<br />

and large-format photography, color prints and slides, photo-silk screening, gumprinting,<br />

blue-printing, dye-transfer, cibachrome, and a variety of other highly<br />

specialized techniques.<br />

FATC, located in Science Hall is open both day and extended evening hours and<br />

provides tutoring for students in college mathematics courses.<br />

Additional Facilities include an amphitheater with a seating capacity of 1,200.<br />
