Photography and Digital Imaging Courses<br />

100-INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY FOR NON MAJOR. Introduction<br />

to digital photography as a means of visual expression for non-photo majors.<br />

Students will learn to better utilize the settings and features of their camera,<br />

understand the basics of digital photography and learn to think and express<br />

themselves in visual terms using the photographic medium. Students will also<br />

be introduced to options available for printing, storing and organizing their<br />

photographs. Students must have an approved digital camera with selectable<br />

shooting modes, which may be either basic point-and-shoot or SLR.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered as needed.<br />

102-INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY. Introduction to digital<br />

photography as a means of visual expression for photography majors. Students<br />

will learn to utilize the settings and features of their camera, understand the<br />

basics of digital photography and learn to think and express themselves in visual<br />

terms using the photographic medium. Students will also be introduced to<br />

fundamental computer concepts, emphasizing hands-on use of the Macintosh<br />

personal computer as a tool for producing and organizing their photographic<br />

images. Students must have an approved digital SLR camera and an approved<br />

Macintosh laptop. One two-hour lecture/critique session and one two-hour lab<br />

a week.<br />

Credit, three semester hours. Offered fall semester.<br />

106-FRESHMAN SEMINAR. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. The purpose<br />

of this workshop is to introduce new Photography majors to the Photography and<br />

Digital Imaging major at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> <strong>College</strong> and to the SW <strong>Virginia</strong>/Upper<br />

East Tennessee natural landscape. Discussion topics will include career paths,<br />

major advising, lab policies and practices, and intranet and internet resources.<br />

Field trips will provide shooting opportunities for new students to work together<br />

on basic photography assignments and will include at least seven departmental<br />

events, exhibitions and openings, and/or excursions to nature areas with potential<br />

photographic significance.<br />

Credit, one semester hour. Offered fall semester.<br />
