210-COLLEGE WRITING. Prerequisite: ENG 101 and 102 or permission of instructor.<br />

An expository writing course exclusively for those students who have not satisfied<br />

the <strong>College</strong>’s writing competency requirement by completing English 101 and 102<br />

at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> or by passing the Writing Competency Assessment Test. No<br />

others are admitted to the course. Students must earn a C- or better to satisfy the<br />

college’s writing competency requirements.<br />

One hour a week. Credit, one semester hour. Offered as needed.<br />

221-AMERICAN LITERATURE I. Prerequisite: C- or better in English 102/104. A<br />

survey of American literature from the period of Exploration to the Civil War.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered fall semester.<br />

222-AMERICAN LITERATURE II. Prerequisite: C- or better in English 102/104. A<br />

survey of American literature from the Reconstruction to 9-11.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered spring semester.<br />

224-HONORS THEMES IN LITERATURE I. Prerequisite: C- or better in English<br />

102/104. A study of selected words from Ancient Greek tragedy to the early<br />

seventeenth century British literature. Students examine the development<br />

of significant intellectual and aesthetic concepts in a cultural context. Themes<br />

designated by instructor.<br />

225-HONORS THEMES IN LITERATURE II. Prerequisite: C- or better in English<br />

102/104. A study of selected literary works from the Enlightenment to the<br />

present. Students examine the development of significant intellectual and<br />

aesthetic concepts in a cultural context. Themes designated by instructor.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered spring semester.<br />

228-DRAMATIC LITERATURE. Students will be introduced to dramatic works that<br />

are representative of important playwrights or that are significant in their own<br />

right. Emphasis will be placed on plays which are still produced. Extensive critical<br />

reading and writing required. Cross listed as THEA 210.<br />

alternate years.<br />

231-MASTERPIECES OF WORLD LITERATURE I. Prerequisite: C- or better in English<br />

102/104. An introduction to the great masterpieces in Continental and Asian<br />

literature from the Ancient World through the seventeenth century.<br />
