<strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers programs leading to licensure in the following<br />

Health and Physical Education – PREK-12<br />

Biology – 6-12<br />

Business – 6-12<br />

English – 6-12<br />

History and Social Studies – 6-12<br />

Prior to applying for licensure, the student must have successfully completed<br />

the program of studies and passed all <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> <strong>College</strong> and <strong>Virginia</strong><br />

Department of Education required assessments.<br />

The teacher preparation program at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a very important<br />

part of the college program. Both faculty and administrators are well aware of its<br />

importance and work consistently to maintain quality in the curriculum and in the<br />

instruction of prospective teachers.<br />

Teaching licensure requirements are subject to change by the <strong>Virginia</strong> Department<br />

of Education. Programs of study and assessment requirements are altered<br />

accordingly when changes are deemed necessary to assure that candidates meet<br />

approved program/licensure requirements.<br />

Education Courses<br />

100-STUDY STRATEGIES. The purpose of this course is to develop self-help<br />

techniques to improve one’s learning and GPA. Emphasis will be on individual<br />

learning styles, time/study management, note-taking skills, active textbook<br />

reading, long-term memory techniques, writing papers, test-taking techniques,<br />

test anxiety, etc. This course is designed to be helpful for tutors, future teachers,<br />

and students wanting self-help.<br />

One hour a week. Credit, one semester hour. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

101-INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATION. This course is designed as an introduction<br />

to the teaching profession. Primarily a field experience, the course gives the<br />

student a chance to participate actively in school situations. Introduction to<br />

contemporary issues in education and reflection on individual goals are also parts<br />

of the course.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, two semester hours. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />
