Economics Courses<br />

200-MICROECONOMICS. A study of contemporary American economic problems<br />

such as consumerism, basic financial planning and money management with an<br />

emphasis on microeconomics analysis.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered every semester.<br />

Satisfies core curriculum requirement.<br />

201-MACROECONOMICS. Prerequisite: Economics 200. A study of the basic<br />

principles essential to an understanding of the fundamental economic problems<br />

facing all economic systems and those policy alternatives designed to deal with<br />

this problem. Emphasis will be given to macroeconomic analysis in the areas of<br />

aggregate demand and supply, fiscal policy, monetary policy, debt management,<br />

economic growth, international relationships, and contemporary economic issues.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered spring semester.<br />

318-ECONOMICS OF FINANCIAL PLANNING, MONEY, AND BANKING. Prerequisite:<br />

Economics 200. A study of American Financial Institutions and markets. Specific<br />

emphasis will be placed on the development of personal financial planning<br />

concepts in areas including budgeting priorities, credit, interest rates, insurance<br />

investments, retirement, and estate planning. Cross-listed with Business 318.<br />

Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered spring semester.<br />

422-SPECIAL TOPICS. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Designed for students<br />

to pursue special advanced topics in areas of economics.<br />

Credit, one to three semester hours. May be repeated for credit up to a maximum<br />

of six semester hours. Offered as needed.<br />

EDUCATION - Teacher Education Program<br />

The education of teachers is an important academic offering of <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>. The teacher education program is planned and supervised by faculty<br />

members from all academic areas offering teacher licensure.<br />

The curriculum is designed to help students acquire the necessary skills and<br />

knowledge to be used in public school teaching. Through this program they<br />

receive instruction in, and are provided experience with, the most effective and<br />

the most current methods and materials in their respective fields.<br />

Students are introduced to the school as an institution, with its various roles and<br />

functions in American society. A variety of courses and field experiences, ranging<br />

from the introductory course in the freshman year through student teaching in<br />

the senior year, serve to fulfill these objectives. The program also aids the student<br />
