341-INNOVATORS IN ART AND LITERATURE. Prerequisite C- or better in English
102/104 and Art 100 or permission of the instructor. The purpose of this class is
to deepen students’ knowledge, understanding, and appreciation for Modernism
and Postmodernism as evolving and correlated philosophical/theoretical
movements that influenced the development of both art and literature. Taught
by a member from both the Art and English Departments, this course takes an
eclectic approach regarding genres and media, focusing on how social changes
and cultural shifts first challenge then transform our ideas of what constitutes
art and literature. Therefore, rather than presenting art and literature as distinct
and independent creative endeavors, we show how they emanate from the
same inspirational sources, their modes are merely variations of expression, and
indeed, art and literature relate to each other as fluid interchanges of form and
ideas. The course encourages open exchange of ideas and creative responses
to the material, which may take form in writing and/or visual expression. This
course is cross-listed in Art and English.
Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered as needed.
371-THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. Prerequisite C- or better in English 102/104. An
