Academic Program 66<br />

Competency requirements are outlined as follows:<br />

1. All students must satisfy the first half of the writing competency<br />

requirement by completing (through traditional, advanced placement<br />

or CLEP credit) English 101-Composition and English 102-Composition<br />

and Literature before they have completed fifty-six (56) semester<br />

hours of course work. Every student will complete English 101 and<br />

102 at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> unless he or she has already completed and<br />

transferred English 101 and 102 credit (traditional, advanced placement<br />

or CLEP credit) by the time he or she enrolls at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong>, or<br />

unless he or she completes English 101 and/or English 102 at another<br />

institution after enrolling at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong>.<br />

2. All students must satisfy the second half of the writing competency<br />

requirement by passing the Writing Competency Assessment Test (WCAT),<br />

after completing English 101 and 102 and by or before completing their<br />

fifty-sixty (56) semester hour. Students who have not yet completed<br />

English 101 and 102 by their fifty-sixth semester hour must still take the<br />

WCAT by or before completing their fifty-sixth semester hour. Students<br />

who transfer in to <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> having already completed fifty-six<br />

hours or more will take the WCAT immediately. The WCAT will require<br />

students to write an expository essay that demonstrates college-level<br />

skills in content development, organization, coherence, unity, sentence<br />

construction, diction, grammar, and usage.<br />

3. Students who do not pass the WCAT can satisfy the second half of the<br />

writing competency requirement by successfully completing English<br />

210, a one-hour writing course designed to help them improve<br />

their writing skills. After they are notified that they have failed the<br />

WCAT, students must enroll in the next available section of English<br />

210. Students in the course earn grades of A, B, C, D, or F. In order<br />

to fulfill the requirement, the student must earn a grade of “C” or<br />

higher. Students may repeat the course until they earn an A, B, or C.<br />

Students with special needs or circumstances should talk with the<br />

English Program Coordinator about alternative ways to satisfy the<br />

<strong>College</strong>’s writing competency requirement.<br />

Residence Requirement<br />

For the Bachelor’s degrees, students must have been in residence for a minimum<br />

of nine months or two semesters. For degree completion, at least 25 percent<br />

of credit semester hours must be earned through instruction offered by <strong>Virginia</strong><br />

<strong>Intermont</strong> <strong>College</strong>. At least 30 of the last 36 semester hours must be taken at<br />

<strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Intermont</strong> <strong>College</strong> 2012–2013 <strong>College</strong> <strong>Catalog</strong>
