422-FAMILY, SCHOOL, AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT. Prerequisite: Education<br />
101 or equivalent. The importance of the development of strong, positive<br />
relationships between home and school is the focus of this course. The student<br />
explores the school’s role as a community center for the family of the young child.<br />
Educational and social theories and strategies are also examined and critiqued.<br />
Two hours a week. Credit, two semester hours. Offered spring semester.<br />
423-EARLY CHILDHOOD PRACTICUM. This course includes both observation and<br />
the practice of instruction in the early childhood classroom. The student observes<br />
and participates in instruction, as directed, for a total of 80 clock hours, under<br />
the supervision of a certified early childhood classroom teacher or administrator.<br />
The course participants also meet weekly to reflect upon observations, relevant<br />
learning, related theory, and implications for their practice. Senior academic<br />
status is required for this course.<br />
Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered as needed.<br />
426-EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM MANAGEMENT. The elements of this course<br />
include the student shadowing a program manager for 60 hours and participating<br />
in the process of reflective journaling. The course also provides introductions to<br />
creating and managing budgets, developing monthly employee work schedules,<br />
and designing nutritious menus. Students complete a management project, as<br />
designed by the cooperating manager or director, the instructor, and the student.<br />
This course is offered to the experienced early childhood teacher, or to those who<br />
have completed either Practicum or Student Teaching.<br />
Three hours a week. Credit, three semester hours. Offered as needed.<br />
462-SPECIAL TOPICS IN CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION. Prerequisite:<br />
Permission of instructor. Designed for students needing to research special topics<br />
or engage in fieldwork in curriculum and instruction. Approved study under the<br />
direction of faculty members in Teacher Education.<br />
Credit, one to three semester hours. May be repeated for a maximum of six<br />
semester hours.<br />
484-STUDENT TEACHING. Prerequisites: A 2.5 GPA; 3.0 Area of Concentration<br />
GPA; Admission to Teacher Education Program and passing scores on all <strong>Virginia</strong><br />
<strong>Intermont</strong> <strong>College</strong> and <strong>Virginia</strong> Department of Education required assessments.<br />
This full semester, capstone course requires the student to be fully responsible for<br />
teaching. All licensure and Teacher Education requirements must be completed. An<br />
on-campus seminar accompanies the student teaching experience. It is designed<br />
to relate theory and practice through study and discussion of the problems and<br />
questions arising during the student teaching experience. Professional association<br />
membership required.<br />
