Professionalism<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• reflect on issues around confidentiality, privacy and<br />

the need to involve family/whānau in patient care within<br />

and outside practice, particularly in rural or small<br />

communities<br />

• consider and engage in supervision or mentoring as a<br />

part of self-care <strong>for</strong> general practitioners<br />

• promote safety issues <strong>for</strong> themselves, other staff and<br />

their patient, including exits from the consulting room<br />

and emergency alerts<br />

• discuss the interpersonal implications of continuity of<br />

care, such as transference and counter-transference<br />

• involve local mental health initiatives to facilitate access<br />

to care, including extended consultations and funded<br />

referral <strong>for</strong> psychological therapies<br />

• reflect and discuss how they might approach concerns<br />

about the mental health of a colleague.<br />

• understand the concept of ‘emotional labour’ of the<br />

consultation, how this relates to mental health<br />

consultations and ongoing care, and potential <strong>for</strong><br />

emotional exhaustion and burn-out<br />

Scholarship<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• maintain current knowledge of best practice in care <strong>for</strong><br />

patients with mental illness<br />

• willingly teach and lead all members of the primary care<br />

team in mental health diagnosis and management<br />

• understand and discuss how to audit aspects of their<br />

management of patients with mental illness, such as<br />

prescribing<br />

• use available resources, such as print or electronic<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation, or organisations and support groups.<br />
