<strong>Curriculum</strong> Travel Medicine <strong>for</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>Practice</strong><br />
Communication<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• take a comprehensive pre-travel history, taking into<br />
account the means of travel within countries, as well<br />
as particular regions that will be visited<br />
• discuss situations or risky behaviours that may increase<br />
the chance of contracting various diseases<br />
• explain the risks and benefits of preventive measures,<br />
such as immunisations, and administer these appropriately<br />
• in<strong>for</strong>m patients of investigation, management and any<br />
containment issues <strong>for</strong> conditions contracted while<br />
travelling.<br />
• always consider travel when taking a history of particular<br />
illnesses that may be picked up overseas<br />
Clinical Expertise<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• use knowledge of or gain access to in<strong>for</strong>mation on more<br />
specialised travel medicine topics<br />
• prescribe <strong>for</strong> the traveller going overseas<br />
• discuss topics of immunisations and specific preventive<br />
measures relating to travel<br />
• undertake a comprehensive immigration medical<br />
examination<br />
• investigate and describe the implications of important<br />
returning traveller issues<br />
• describe the particular conditions that will have an impact<br />
on immigration to <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>.<br />
Professionalism<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• manage the patient requesting supplies <strong>for</strong> a traveller’s<br />
first aid kit<br />
• allow adequate time to cover all the issues involved in a<br />
travel consultation<br />
• identify which patients are required to see a travel medicine<br />
specialist, recognising their own level of expertise<br />
• describe the adequate storage of and protocols <strong>for</strong> travelrelated<br />
vaccines.<br />
