Professionalism<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• resist the temptation to investigate the abuse but<br />

demonstrate ease in asking, assessing and advising<br />

of support<br />

• assess family violence in a way that recognises the<br />

importance of involving the whole practice team, the<br />

level of confidentiality required, and the need to provide<br />

support to staff following a disclosure of abuse<br />

• understand clinician reporting requirements <strong>for</strong><br />

suspected child abuse or neglect<br />

• consider their own beliefs and cultural issues when<br />

dealing with family violence<br />

• understand the value of sensitively and proactively<br />

raising the issue of abuse<br />

• discuss the ethical issues related to reporting family<br />

violence<br />

• understand how the practice policy <strong>for</strong> prevention and<br />

intervention in family violence operates<br />

• take into account that the presence of certain family/<br />

whānau members in the consulting room may influence<br />

the likelihood of disclosure occurring.<br />

Scholarship<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• describe the burden of family violence in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong><br />

in relation to the local region, the country as a whole<br />

and different ethnic groups<br />

• document verbatim the history and findings on the<br />

physical examination so that notes are reliable should<br />

they be needed <strong>for</strong> any legal purpose in the future<br />

• discuss the medical consequences and disabilities<br />

of all types caused as a direct result of family violence<br />

to individuals, families and communities<br />

• be able to access and understand the usefulness of<br />

body diagram sheets.<br />

• discuss the aspects of family violence relating to the<br />

inequalities of health suffered by Māori and the historical<br />

basis on which this is founded<br />
