Clinical Expertise<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• understand the pathology, clinical management and<br />
epidemiology of illnesses relating to women<br />
• discuss fertility issues as they relate to women<br />
• per<strong>for</strong>m examinations and gynaecological procedures<br />
relating specifically to women’s health that are safe to<br />
per<strong>for</strong>m in the primary care setting, recognising that using<br />
a chaperone is a safe practice <strong>for</strong> the patient and GP<br />
• discuss strategies to reduce the inequalities in health<br />
between Māori and non-Māori women<br />
• manage and prescribe medication relating to women’s<br />
health issues<br />
• recognise obstetric or gynaecological emergencies<br />
and treat or refer appropriately<br />
• discuss all aspects of menstruation throughout the life<br />
of the woman<br />
• explain local options in unintended pregnancy and<br />
negotiate a timely plan, recognising that not all unintended<br />
pregnancies are unwanted<br />
• recognise and be willing to discuss signs of abuse<br />
in a non-judgemental manner and refer appropriately,<br />
understanding the importance of proactive enquiry<br />
• undertake an antenatal consultation, taking into account all<br />
the screening, management and lifestyle issues that require<br />
full discussions, and referring <strong>for</strong> ongoing care as required.<br />
Professionalism<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• describe the use of chaperones and introduce them<br />
appropriately to the patient<br />
• up-skill in areas relating to women’s health to meet the<br />
needs of their practice population, such as ultrasound<br />
scanning skills in rural areas<br />
• acknowledge professional boundaries that are likely to<br />
impact on the doctor–patient relationship, particularly<br />
in relation to power, culture, gender and sexuality<br />
• provide advocacy <strong>for</strong> women patients, especially in relation<br />
to those suffering from family violence.<br />
Scholarship<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• audit their practice to ensure best practice <strong>for</strong> their female<br />
patients is being achieved<br />
• promote and encourage staff training of increase service<br />
provision to women.<br />
• undertake ongoing training to enhance skills in women’s<br />
health<br />
