Context of <strong>General</strong> <strong>Practice</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• work towards reducing barriers to Māori and Pacific<br />
people seeking and receiving mental health care in primary<br />
care in the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong><br />
• describe local resources and pathways to obtain help<br />
and support <strong>for</strong> patients with mental health problems<br />
• reflect on the demographics and other factors in their<br />
practice that affect prevalence of mental illness<br />
• build effective relationships and work as a team with<br />
community mental health services and other providers,<br />
such as Māori health providers.<br />
• be aware of and sensitive to the socioeconomic impact of<br />
serious mental illness<br />
Management<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• recognise the importance of building and leading<br />
a team approach to mental health in their practice<br />
• compile a shared management plan <strong>for</strong> particular patients<br />
who may use several mental health services<br />
• reflect how they might manage financial issues of<br />
extended consultations and time management relating<br />
to patients with mental health problems<br />
• discuss strategies to manage the potential increase in<br />
mental health conditions in the practice population.<br />
