Clinical Expertise<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• discuss the implications of the Treaty of Waitangi <strong>for</strong><br />
clinical practice<br />
• understand the role of access to quality health care as<br />
a determinant of ethnic inequalities in health <strong>for</strong> Māori<br />
• understand the importance of whānau, hapū, iwi, and the<br />
role of Māori social structures in supporting Māori health<br />
• identify barriers to Māori access to health care at the<br />
individual, organisational and structural levels and how<br />
they may be overcome<br />
• understand the potential of whānau as a network of<br />
support and rein<strong>for</strong>cement of positive health practices<br />
in the daily life of patients<br />
• understand cultural characteristics that impact on clinical<br />
presentation and management to be able to work<br />
effectively with Māori<br />
• understand the meaning of whānau ora and its<br />
implications <strong>for</strong> clinical practice, and provide whānau<br />
ora-oriented general practice care<br />
• identify and contribute to initiatives designed to address<br />
inequalities in health <strong>for</strong> Māori and improve Māori health<br />
• understand and use documented Māori models of health<br />
such as Te Whare Tapa Wha<br />
• understand how to take a population health approach<br />
to primary care delivery and monitor inequities between<br />
different practice populations<br />
• describe and understand the key health issues affecting<br />
Māori and their implications <strong>for</strong> clinical practice<br />
• advocate <strong>for</strong> collecting and using quality ethnicity data<br />
to in<strong>for</strong>m practice<br />
• understand the historical, social, economic and political<br />
determinants of Māori health and their implications <strong>for</strong><br />
clinical practice<br />
• discuss the range of Māori health services available<br />
and when referral is appropriate.<br />
