Professionalism<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• recognise when their own attitudes, values and beliefs<br />
might impact on patient care when discussing the<br />
implications of genetically inherited conditions and<br />
maintain a professional approach<br />
• advocate <strong>for</strong> patient and family/whānau access to allied<br />
health professional services and resources, including<br />
support groups<br />
• foster inter-professional relationships to enable them to<br />
deal with common genetic disorders in their communities<br />
• understand the emotional impact on patients and family/<br />
whānau of genetic diagnosis.<br />
• understand the ethical issues surrounding disclosure<br />
of in<strong>for</strong>mation in relation to genetic risk to other family<br />
members or other third parties<br />
Scholarship<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• discuss clinical knowledge of the pathology and clinical<br />
issues associated with common genetic diagnoses<br />
• describe the implications of genetic disease in different<br />
ethnic and religious cultures.<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• recognise that genetic risk may be viewed differently<br />
in family/whānau-based cultures<br />
• engage with local genetic services and enable access to<br />
genetic counselling in isolated or rural areas.<br />
• explain how they use local and national support services<br />
and other members of the primary care team to care <strong>for</strong><br />
patients and families with genetic disorders<br />
Management<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• educate their practice team about genetic diseases and<br />
their management with particular emphasis on ethical,<br />
legal and social implications<br />
• describe relevant genetic screening and implementation<br />
within the practice.<br />
