Acute Care<br />

A<br />

Communication<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• effectively assess acute illness in a telephone consultation,<br />

eliciting appropriate details and history, and give<br />

appropriate advice <strong>for</strong> home care or need <strong>for</strong> further<br />

assessment<br />

• communicate with and ask advice from colleagues in<br />

the primary care team, including nursing staff and<br />

specialist colleagues<br />

• take a relevant and focused history appropriate to<br />

a general practice environment from a patient<br />

presenting acutely<br />

• ensure systems are in place to in<strong>for</strong>m other medical<br />

practitioners involved in patient care of relevant<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation to provide seamless continuity of care.<br />

• understand the importance of communicating with<br />

patients and family/whānau when obtaining in<strong>for</strong>med<br />

consent <strong>for</strong> management options, plans and treatments<br />

Clinical Expertise<br />

<strong>The</strong> basics<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate:<br />

• proficiency to a minimum Level 5 NZRC CORE, plus<br />

further training in acute care as appropriate to location,<br />

<strong>for</strong> example APLS, PRIME<br />

• they have their patients’ welfare and safety as their first<br />

priority (apply the litmus test of ‘What would I want to<br />

happen if this was a member of my family?’)<br />

• a clear, robust and systematic approach to acute care<br />

that ensures safe practice <strong>for</strong> themselves and their staff<br />

• awareness of their limitations and an ability to seek<br />

advice (always seek advice or help if in doubt).<br />

Cardiovascular<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• assess and manage chest pain, including differentiation,<br />

initial or definitive treatment, and referral with or without<br />

pre-hospital treatment appropriate to the practice location<br />

• assess possible deep vein thrombosis and demonstrate<br />

knowledge of diagnostic pathways, including local<br />

protocols and initial management in the community<br />

• assess and manage acute arrhythmias as above<br />

• assess and manage acute peripheral arterial insufficiency.<br />

• assess and manage an acute cerebrovascular event<br />

Cardiorespiratory<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to assess, differentiate and manage acute breathlessness, including rational clinical<br />

decision-making <strong>for</strong> severity and the need <strong>for</strong> secondary assessment or hospitalisation versus management in the<br />

community, and secondary prevention in all age groups, including children.<br />
