Communication<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• clearly convey urgency in communications with<br />

patients and specialist staff where there is an<br />

eye-related emergency<br />

• describe the eye examination process clearly<br />

to the patient, their family/whānau or carers.<br />

Clinical Expertise<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• examine the eye and take an ophthalmic history<br />

• develop skills in dealing with a <strong>for</strong>eign body in the eye,<br />

its removal and appropriate follow-up<br />

• identify urgent eye conditions that require referral<br />

• describe eye conditions that may affect infants and<br />

how to examine <strong>for</strong> these.<br />

• prescribe a variety of treatments <strong>for</strong> eye conditions,<br />

recognising risks and benefits<br />

Professionalism<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• consider the emotional impact and disabilities<br />

associated with loss of vision and take this into account<br />

within consultations<br />

• ensure competence in skills and knowledge by<br />

participation in ongoing professional development.<br />

• allow appropriate time <strong>for</strong> discussion and negotiation<br />

of both examination and management of eye-related<br />

conditions<br />
