Core competencies<br />

Fellows of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> <strong>College</strong> of <strong>General</strong> Practitioners are able to:<br />

• understand and apply the principles of the Treaty of<br />

Waitangi to general practice<br />

• advocate on behalf of patients and the community when<br />

appropriate<br />

• identify the societal, cultural, economic, spiritual, gender,<br />

environmental, geographic, demographic, occupational<br />

and other factors that impact on health and illness<br />

• be aware of the range of integrative and complementary<br />

medicine in the community and acknowledge the attitudes<br />

and cultural factors, <strong>for</strong> example the use of traditional<br />

Chinese medicine and traditional Māori healing<br />

• identify a range of factors that can impact on accessing<br />

health services and resources and develop appropriate<br />

responses<br />

• provide population-based health care, as well as<br />

individual care<br />

• work effectively within an inter-professional practice team<br />

• use resources equitably and cost-effectively, balancing the<br />

needs of individuals and populations<br />

• acknowledge the skills and resources of others, lay<br />

and professional, in working collaboratively to deliver<br />

health care<br />

• respond appropriately to local and global changes that<br />

impact on general practice.<br />
