Professionalism<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• understand and demonstrate cultural competence in<br />
all aspects of clinical practice with Māori patients and<br />
whānau<br />
• actively participate and, in some instances, take a<br />
leadership role in inter-sectoral activities that contribute<br />
to whānau ora<br />
• discuss strategies <strong>for</strong> consulting with Māori<br />
• acknowledge and support Māori doctors stepping into<br />
leadership roles in Māori health<br />
• understand the role of kaumātua and kuia in Māori social<br />
structures and demonstrate respect <strong>for</strong> their status and<br />
cultural expertise<br />
• take on community and professional roles that contribute<br />
to addressing ethnic inequalities in health <strong>for</strong> Māori.<br />
• understand the GP’s role in death and dying and how<br />
this applies within a Māori cultural context<br />
Scholarship<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• understand the value of Māori health research and other<br />
research that contributes to addressing inequalities in<br />
health and contribute as appropriate<br />
• use practice ethnicity data to identify and, where<br />
appropriate, address potential inequalities between Māori<br />
and non-Māori<br />
• develop high-level competencies, such as Māori language<br />
fluency, that facilitate culturally responsive practice that<br />
contributes to achieving health equity <strong>for</strong> Māori<br />
• develop interventions to address inequalities between<br />
Māori and non-Māori patients and conduct reviews to<br />
monitor progress.<br />
