Core competencies<br />
Fellows of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> <strong>College</strong> of <strong>General</strong> Practitioners are able to:<br />
• communicate competently and sensitively while<br />
recognising the health literacy needs of the patient/whānau<br />
• relate effectively to patients of different life stages, cultural<br />
backgrounds, gender, socioeconomic status and beliefs<br />
• communicate in ways that facilitate optimal patient<br />
care and patient satisfaction with the consultation<br />
• communicate effectively with other professionals in the<br />
practice team, and the wider primary care field, and with<br />
medical colleagues working in other specialties<br />
• communicate effectively and appropriately in situations<br />
where there is impairment and/or language barriers<br />
• advocate to improve the health of the enrolled patient<br />
population and the wider community<br />
• establish person-centred relationships with patients<br />
and their families/whānau characterised by a focus on<br />
the patient’s and whānau needs, concerns, beliefs and<br />
expectations<br />
• provide patients with relevant in<strong>for</strong>mation about<br />
conditions, treatments and risk, seek in<strong>for</strong>med consent<br />
and negotiate management plans<br />
• incorporate the principles of Te Whare Tapa Wha and<br />
similar models of health into their consultations where<br />
appropriate<br />
• use accurate and concise writing skills to keep<br />
appropriate patient records and write referral letters<br />
• manage consultations within time constraints while<br />
ensuring the patient’s and whānau needs are<br />
appropriately met<br />
• communicate safely and effectively by electronic media.<br />
• use a range of interviewing and counselling skills<br />
appropriately to help patients maintain or change<br />
behaviours<br />
