Communication<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• acknowledge and understand the barriers and<br />

opportunities computers (and other electronics) can<br />

have on the doctor–patient relationship<br />

• apply safe and effective use of the computer and patient<br />

management system (PMS) in the clinical setting<br />

• recognise the use of video consultation and the<br />

implications of this <strong>for</strong> future televideo consulting<br />

• understand the potential changes in day-to-day<br />

communication with patients, acknowledging the impact<br />

of the increase in the use of social networking, text and<br />

email by younger patients.<br />

• describe the differences in electronic <strong>for</strong>ms of<br />

communication compared to face-to-face, and ways<br />

of reducing misinterpretation of in<strong>for</strong>mation, in particular<br />

through purely electronic communications, such as email<br />

and text<br />

Clinical Expertise<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• reflect on the potential risks of in<strong>for</strong>mation management,<br />

including security and privacy issues, and will be familiar<br />

with computer security guidelines<br />

• use patient management systems (PMS) and other<br />

electronic systems used in patient care.<br />

• maintain doctor and patient safety<br />
