Travel Medicine<br />

Scholarship<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• undertake further education in travel medicine<br />
• educate or encourage education of practice staff on travel<br />
medicine consultations, as appropriate<br />
• keep comprehensive notes on travel consultations to<br />
ensure all risks are covered<br />
• record accurate details of immigration medical<br />
consultations.<br />
Context of <strong>General</strong> <strong>Practice</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• balance the risks and benefits <strong>for</strong> families/whānau visiting<br />
relations in overseas countries with <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>-born<br />
children<br />
• discuss the cost versus benefit of travel medicine<br />
preventive measures<br />
• recognise who are the local general practitioners and<br />
other health professionals with interests and skills in<br />
travel medicine and refer where necessary<br />
• establish a working relationship with an infectious<br />
diseases consultant or microbiologist in the local or<br />
regional area <strong>for</strong> discussion on presentations that require<br />
their input.<br />
Management<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• describe and maintain ‘cold chain’ processes in the<br />
practice<br />
• consider the implications <strong>for</strong> the practice community of<br />
communicable diseases that may have been brought in<br />
from overseas.<br />
