Clinical Expertise<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• per<strong>for</strong>m a focused examination, being sensitive to the<br />

privacy of the patient and any cultural requirements,<br />

and recognise that using a chaperone is a safe practice<br />

<strong>for</strong> both GP and patient<br />

• initiate tests and referral <strong>for</strong> the investigation of subfertility<br />

• discuss and prescribe contraception across the<br />

reproductive age range, taking into account WHO<br />

categories, and accurately educate the patient or couple<br />

on correct use<br />

• assess and manage erectile dysfunction<br />

• screen, test, treat and contact trace those at risk of<br />

sexually transmissible infections, referring when necessary,<br />

and providing accurate and timely education<br />

• identify and manage symptoms related to peri-menopause<br />

• apply screening principles <strong>for</strong> cancers of the breast,<br />

cervix and prostate<br />

• remain vigilant <strong>for</strong> signs of abuse, violence or coercion<br />

and know who to refer to.<br />

• explain local options <strong>for</strong> unintended pregnancy and<br />

negotiate a timely plan, remembering that not all<br />

unintended pregnancies are unwanted<br />

Professionalism<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• establish clear professional boundaries around<br />

confidentiality within the practice team, particularly<br />

in rural communities<br />

• support a patient’s choice in pregnancy regardless of their<br />

own view on contraception and abortion.<br />

• maintain updated contact details and be able to set in<br />

place clear guidelines and appropriate arrangements <strong>for</strong><br />

communicating with patients, such as giving results<br />
