Professionalism<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• recognise the need <strong>for</strong> support of family/whānau, carers<br />
and colleagues and describe ways of enabling this<br />
• define confidentiality and personal boundaries <strong>for</strong><br />
each situation, and re-evaluate them as necessary<br />
• discuss the ethical issues that may surround screening<br />
and early detection of asymptomatic disease<br />
• manage inter-professional relationships, including<br />
non-medical ones, such as tohunga<br />
• recognise and enable patient autonomy<br />
• understand and empathise with a patient on their journey<br />
through cancer (diagnosis, treatment and management)<br />
and take steps to support and enable this.<br />
• appraise and discuss alternative or integrative therapies,<br />
including traditional therapies, in an ethical manner while<br />
recognising the goals and needs of the patient<br />
Scholarship<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• record screening and risk factors <strong>for</strong> cancer<br />
• appraise the risks, benefits and evidence <strong>for</strong><br />
complementary therapies<br />
• reflect on personal knowledge, attitudes and experiences,<br />
identifying areas to explore and develop<br />
• recognise the limitations of an evidence base, particularly<br />
in palliative care<br />
• develop awareness and knowledge of current cancer<br />
treatment trials any patients may be involved in<br />
• take part in ongoing education to up-skill in appropriate<br />
aspects of symptom management.<br />
Context of <strong>General</strong> <strong>Practice</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• become fully conversant with the National Screening<br />
Programmes and their implementation in practice<br />
• engage with other allied health providers in creating a team<br />
approach to support patients and their family/whānau<br />
• maintain professional relationships with the patient, their<br />
family/wha - nau, carers, other specialist and allied health<br />
providers and community support groups, such as the<br />
Cancer Society<br />
• develop and maintain knowledge of cancers that are<br />
particularly prevalent in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> and the screening,<br />
treatments <strong>for</strong> and management of them.<br />
