Ear, Nose and Throat<br />
Communication<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• maintain a person-centred approach when working<br />
with patients, their family/whānau and/or interpreters<br />
• consider appropriate communication and show sensitivity<br />
when examining the heads of Māori patients.<br />
• understand the barriers faced by our deaf community in<br />
obtaining health care and demonstrate the advocacy skills<br />
required to reduce inequalities in access<br />
Clinical Expertise<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• understand allergic conditions, their investigation and<br />
management, acutely and long term<br />
• understand the examination skills required <strong>for</strong> assessing<br />
a variety of ear-related conditions, such as vertigo and<br />
hearing loss<br />
• discuss dental health and its management in both<br />
children and adults<br />
• understand acute emergency treatment and chronic care<br />
management of a variety of ear, nose and throat<br />
conditions, such as sleep apnoea, sinusitis, epistaxis and<br />
otitis media<br />
• apply knowledge of investigation and management of<br />
sore throats, describing ways to reduce the incidence<br />
of progression to rheumatic heart disease, thereby<br />
reducing health inequalities<br />
• understand and manage particular risks and treatments<br />
of epistaxis, recognising the peculiarities of managing this<br />
in an isolated area<br />
• explain the anatomical and physiological considerations<br />
when examining the ear, nose and throat<br />
• share their understanding and knowledge about possible<br />
interventions <strong>for</strong> hearing loss patients, such as hearing<br />
aids and cochlear implants<br />
• understand the process of assessment, investigation and<br />
treatment of throat and neck presentations, such as lump<br />
in the neck and hoarseness of voice<br />
• apply their knowledge of local laboratory requirements<br />
<strong>for</strong> tests and interpret test results.<br />
