A Acute Care<br />
Professionalism<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• maintain the skills needed <strong>for</strong> acute care appropriate<br />
to the practice type and location<br />
• ensure they have an appropriate support network in<br />
place <strong>for</strong> their own self-care; doctors providing this type<br />
of care should engage in mentoring or supervision<br />
• place patient safety as the priority, recognising their<br />
limitations and seeking help or advice appropriately<br />
• realise it is an ethical obligation to provide emergency<br />
first aid care in any situation, whether on or off duty<br />
until necessary help services arrive<br />
• show willingness and have the ability to lead and work<br />
as part of a team to provide the best overall patient care<br />
• participate in acute care provision and/or ensure this<br />
is in place <strong>for</strong> patients enrolled in their care.<br />
• maintain staff, equipment and premises suitable to<br />
provide acute care, negotiating with funders (health<br />
board, local trust etc), as necessary, and facilitating<br />
training opportunities <strong>for</strong> the primary care team<br />
Scholarship<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• maintain the necessary skills needed <strong>for</strong> acute care<br />
appropriate to the practice type and location<br />
• show a willingness to teach and support the primary<br />
care team in acute care.<br />
Context of <strong>General</strong> <strong>Practice</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• develop and maintain a good working relationship with<br />
local base hospital acute services, ambulance services,<br />
mental health services, police and other individuals or<br />
agencies involved in acute care, such as the fire service<br />
• audit significant events and deal with them appropriately<br />
• be aware of developments in IT to facilitate the best<br />
care when patient’s records are not available, <strong>for</strong><br />
example Care Insight<br />
• ensure systems are in place to allow <strong>for</strong> reasonable<br />
acute care requirements and ‘business as usual’<br />
scheduling <strong>for</strong> the practice population.<br />
• delegate to other team members who might have<br />
more skills or knowledge, such as nursing colleagues,<br />
mental health staff and paramedics<br />
