<strong>Curriculum</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>Practice</strong><br />
Communication<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• distinguish the different presentations of pain, obtain<br />
a detailed pain history from the patient and, where<br />
appropriate, from whānau/family members, carers<br />
and employers<br />
• communicate where appropriate, in conjunction with<br />
the patient, with whānau/family, carers and employers<br />
to promote accurate disease monitoring and to enable<br />
rehabilitation plans.<br />
• employ empathy and motivational interviewing skills<br />
to help develop a sound therapeutic partnership with<br />
the patient<br />
Clinical Expertise<br />
<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />
• take a comprehensive history, including identifying urgent<br />
and emergency symptoms, and important psychosocial<br />
stressors on rheumatological conditions<br />
• understand indications <strong>for</strong> and develop competency<br />
in joint aspiration and injection appropriate to general<br />
practice<br />
• distinguish specific rheumatological conditions across<br />
different populations to a high level<br />
• employ the principles of in<strong>for</strong>med consent be<strong>for</strong>e<br />
embarking on any procedures<br />
• show awareness of the issue of somatisation (bodily stress<br />
syndrome), where musculoskeletal symptoms may have a<br />
psychological basis<br />
• enable the patient to realise self-help strategies,<br />
with the support of community resources<br />
• organise investigations, interpret the results and propose<br />
a rationale <strong>for</strong> further investigations to aid diagnosis of<br />
common rheumatological conditions<br />
• prescribe appropriately <strong>for</strong> treatment and pain<br />
management in rheumatological conditions, describing<br />
the risks and benefits of medications.<br />
• <strong>for</strong>mulate a comprehensive management plan that may<br />
include more than one health care provider<br />
