Core competencies<br />
Fellows of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> <strong>College</strong> of <strong>General</strong> Practitioners are able to:<br />
• contribute to the management functions of health services,<br />
including human resources, employment, business and<br />
clinical governance<br />
• demonstrate an awareness of the advantages of full<br />
engagement of all members of the primary care team<br />
• use in<strong>for</strong>mation management skills to manage patient data<br />
efficiently and ethically<br />
• use every opportunity to appropriately share knowledge<br />
and skills gained through their own experience and training<br />
• reconcile differences in access to health services<br />
according to rurality, socioeconomic and cultural<br />
determinants, as relevant<br />
• reconcile the needs of the individual general practitioner<br />
and practice with the needs of the wider health economy<br />
• recognise that <strong>for</strong> the best patient outcome there must<br />
be a team approach to primary care with the general<br />
practitioner in a leading role, working respectfully and<br />
co-operatively with other professionals and disciplines<br />
• reflect on the health needs of the community in which they<br />
work and develop innovative strategies to meet these<br />
needs, recognising the integral part that primary care has<br />
to play.<br />
Further competencies<br />
As further experience in general practice is gained, Fellows of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> <strong>College</strong> of <strong>General</strong> Practitioners<br />
are able to:<br />
• develop skills in strategic planning and use them to<br />
develop and improve health services and promote<br />
general practice<br />
• assess and lead further development of the practice as a<br />
business, meeting the needs of staff, patients and the<br />
wider community<br />
• appraise and evaluate the need <strong>for</strong> proposed change,<br />
and develop skills to implement these changes<br />
• apply a range of business, in<strong>for</strong>mation, practice and<br />
employment management strategies appropriate to the<br />
general practice context.<br />
• advocate <strong>for</strong> ongoing opportunities <strong>for</strong> all team members<br />
to operate at the top of their scope while continuously<br />
extending their skill levels<br />
