Communication<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• communicate genetic risk to patients and describe the<br />

difference between testing and screening, <strong>for</strong> example<br />

antenatal screening <strong>for</strong> genetic conditions<br />

• explore family relationships, including issues around<br />

adoption and paternity<br />

• explain the implications of common genetic conditions<br />

to an individual and their family/whānau<br />

• support family/whānau through clinical uncertainty in the<br />

process of diagnosis or when there is no diagnosis.<br />

• in<strong>for</strong>m patients and their family/whānau about genetic<br />

risks, but encourage them to make their own choices<br />

and support their decision<br />

Clinical Expertise<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• describe how genetics underpin a variety of illnesses<br />

and conditions<br />

• understand the implications of genetic conditions on<br />

other family members<br />

• draw a genetic family tree<br />

• discuss with families the role of genetic screening in<br />

relation to developmental delay or disability<br />

• manage, monitor and screen <strong>for</strong> genetic disease in<br />

their community, taking into account particularly at-risk<br />

populations or families<br />

• work within their limits of competency<br />

• incorporate emerging genetic screening into their practice<br />

• understand and follow the standard genetic testing<br />

processes as detailed by national genetic services<br />

• describe the parameters of screening tests and what they<br />

mean, referring to regional services appropriately<br />

• maintain confidential records of genetic testing, genetic<br />

risk and potential familial conditions.<br />
