Communication<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• communicate the benefits and risks of population health<br />

activities, such as immunisation programmes, to patients,<br />

family/whānau and communities in a non-judgmental way<br />

• use the communication skills required when in<strong>for</strong>ming<br />

patients of serious conditions that have both personal<br />

and public health implications, such as hepatitis and HIV<br />

• discuss all aspects of infectious diseases with patients,<br />

and where appropriate their family/whānau, and the<br />

implications of these <strong>for</strong> the wider population<br />

• use brief intervention <strong>for</strong> conditions that have an impact<br />

on population health, such as smoking, diet and exercise<br />

• describe the various diet-related conditions that contribute<br />

to the burden of disease in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> and ways of<br />

discussing these with patients and their family/whānau<br />

and carers<br />

• discuss the specific requirements confidentially and<br />

the ethical issues behind notifying other authorities and<br />

disclosure of patient in<strong>for</strong>mation and how to communicate<br />

these, such as through contact tracing.<br />

Clinical Expertise<br />

<strong>The</strong> GP will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

• discuss the childhood immunisation schedule and the<br />

conditions it protects against<br />

• describe the implications of long-term conditions on<br />

the population and individuals, and ways to reduce<br />

adverse outcomes<br />

• describe the various notifiable diseases and the<br />

assessment, treatment and long-term management<br />

of them<br />

• record lifestyle factors that impact on the health of<br />

individual patients and interventions undertaken to<br />

reduce the risk of developing chronic conditions<br />

• discuss the health implications of immigration to<br />

<strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> and how to assess them<br />

• recognise the benefit of proactive, individually targeted<br />

lifestyle and nutritional interventions that can lead to<br />

protection from future serious disease.<br />
