Schedule of classes<br />

Week 1<br />

Introduction to the course. Discussion of reading list and methodology of the course.<br />

Explanation of the method of assessment and practicum. Brief introductory test to<br />

check previous knowledge of students and how familiar they are with the area of<br />

study. Explanation of the first special report (due in week 8): students will choose<br />

one political institutions or one interest group, and they will work in teams of three.<br />

They will prepare a 2500-word written report addressing the main problems and<br />

challenges <strong>for</strong> media coverage of the body or group chosen. They will also explain<br />

the political role played by that institution, its interests and its relationship with other<br />

actors of the political arena. Reports must include interviews with journalists and<br />

speakers who work in the field. Reading <strong>for</strong> week 2: Armstrong (2002, 2004) and<br />

Perloff (1998).<br />

Week 2<br />

Lecture: Institutions, organizations and political players. Separation of power in<br />

a democratic system: Executive (areas and organization, functioning, hierarchy),<br />

Legislature (structure, committees, legislative procedures, political party<br />

representation) and Judiciary (structure and organization, courts, laws). Seminar:<br />

Discussion of main features of reporting and writing from legislatures and Supreme
