Week 5<br />

1. Lecture: Powerful Interview Questions<br />

Discussion: Students discuss proposed profile subjects and are randomly given<br />

the name of one subject <strong>for</strong> the Deep Profile assignment: an in-depth profile of the<br />

person, either a newsfeature or magazine piece of 1,500 to 2,000 words, relying<br />

mainly on an interview with the subject, interviews with at least two other people,<br />

pubic records and online in<strong>for</strong>mation. The profile is due the first meeting of Week 11.<br />

Assignment: Students start background research of the profile subject and will<br />

submit a two-page memo the second meeting of Week 6 explaining the focus of their<br />

story, the strategy <strong>for</strong> finding in<strong>for</strong>mation, and the potential problems. The memo<br />

will also include at least 10 questions that must be asked of the subject.<br />
