include the website of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (http://www.<br />

ipcc.ch/) and extracts from Lovelock (2007).<br />

For the rest of the second semester, readings <strong>for</strong> the following week should be<br />

assigned in consultation with that week’s guest instructor.<br />

Week 4<br />

Climate change and the debate on global warming (Guest instructor)<br />

Assignment: Write a story based on the guest instructor’s assessment of the Kyoto<br />

protocol. Assignments following classes given by guest instructors should be based<br />

on the class but could take various <strong>for</strong>ms, such as news or feature stories, group<br />

presentations, invitations to industry representatives to rebut the guest’s analysis,<br />

etc.<br />

Week 5<br />

General agriculture: definition of agriculture; world population and food<br />

production; the livestock industry; systems of livestock production;<br />

management of different types of farm animals. (Guest instructor)<br />

Assignment: Based on the guest instructor’s account of issues in agriculture in your<br />

country.<br />

Book report (1) due.<br />

Week 6<br />

Malaria: Types of mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasite; treatment;<br />

environmental sanitation; drug resistance; economic implications of malaria. (Guest<br />

instructor)<br />

Assignment: Write an account of the science of anti-malaria medication. Book report<br />

(2) on Friendman (due end of week 10).<br />

Week 7<br />

Food science and technology: food poisoning and its prevention; food processing<br />

and preservation; contamination of food from natural sources, and other food<br />

issues.(Guest instructor).<br />

Assignment: Investigative story on food inspection OR abortion services OR HIV/AIDS<br />

treatment in your area. (Due Week 12.)<br />

Week 8<br />

Reproductive organs and body functions: maturation; physiological<br />

changes; implications; abortion. (Guest instructor.)
