3 Lecture: Reviewing. Structure, key components, point of view, atmosphere,<br />

reportage etc. Focus on book reviewing and examples from books pages.<br />

Workshop: How to write a book review.<br />

Assignment: Read a new novel and write 500 word review (<strong>for</strong> Week 4)<br />

Reading: Relevant chapter (13) on reviewing by Keeble (2006)<br />

4 Lecture: The work of the arts journalist. The arts beat. Possible guest journalist<br />

input.<br />

Workshop: Students present book reviews. Share and discuss.<br />

Reading: Rod Allen<br />

5 Lecture: Culture and the nation. Culture, art and ‘imagined communities’: role of<br />

cultural production in creating narratives of nation and community<br />

Reading: Benedict Anderson Ch.2.<br />

6 Lecture: The modern concept of the cultural industries<br />

Reading: Hesmondalgh Introduction and Ch 1 & 2<br />

Seminar: Discussion of genres in current arts <strong>journalism</strong>, <strong>for</strong> example contrasting<br />

promotional versus critical functions.<br />

Assignment: Students collect promotional material re recently launched film<br />

7 Lecture: The culture business: the economics of the culture industries, leisure,<br />

and their significance in national economies. Guest input from agent / PR person<br />

Reading: Hesmondalgh Ch 5 & relevant trade magazines, if they exist.<br />

Seminar: Discussion of integration of cultural production & leisure<br />

Assignment: Students audit their families’ leisure activities and consumption of<br />

cultural products during a typical day / weekend<br />

8 Lecture: The historical development of arts <strong>journalism</strong>. The role of the critical<br />

essay and review in different cultures and its place in the rise of the mass media.<br />

Assignment: Write a short review of a recent film.<br />

Readings: Stuart Allen pp.7 – 24; David Marshall.<br />

Workshop: Examine selection of film reviews. Student reviews.<br />

9 Lecture: Film Reviews – function, different types of review, structure, key<br />

components, point of view, atmosphere, reportage.
