Class Activity: Discussion on the so called “glocal” news. The technology’s influence<br />

in the international coverage: blogs and citizen <strong>journalism</strong>.<br />

Week 10<br />

Seminar: Discussion on how internet may be a tool <strong>for</strong> international reporting<br />

Reporting / writing Assignment: Students will create an international news blog<br />

– with title, sections and subjects.<br />

Required reading: Reporting <strong>for</strong> Change: A Handbook <strong>for</strong> Local Journalists in Crisis<br />

Areas.<br />

Week 11<br />

Movie: Live from Baghdad (2002). Director: Mick Jackson. 110 minutes. Drama/War<br />

Seminar: Discussion on journalists’ safety in conflicted regions.<br />

Reporting / writing Assignment: Students will write a news story based on material<br />

in websites of the Institute <strong>for</strong> War and Peace Reporting and the Dart Center <strong>for</strong><br />

Journalism and Trauma.<br />

Required reading: Makunike’s 1993 article.<br />

Week 12<br />

Class Activity: Discussion on stereotypes in international reporting: do they still<br />

exist Which role they play, and how to avoid them.<br />

Required reading: Research in the site Global Journalist<br />

Week 13<br />

Guest lecturer: an international news editor to talk about his/her work routine<br />

Reporting / writing Assignment: Students will interview the guest lecturer and<br />

write a news story <strong>for</strong> radio, TV, magazine, newspaper, news agency or online using<br />

quotations.<br />

Required reading: International Principles of Professional Ethics in Journalism<br />

(UNESCO); and the International Center <strong>for</strong> Journalists’ list of Codes of Ethics.<br />

Week 14<br />

Class Activity: Discussion on the international principles journalists should observe.<br />

External Activity: Production of international news stories using news material from<br />

a local newsroom (newspaper, radio, TV, news agency or online material).<br />

Required reading: Journalists and the law. Legal <strong>journalism</strong> codes in different<br />

<strong>countries</strong>.
