Week 3<br />

Lecture: What is international/<strong>for</strong>eign news made of The structure of news.<br />

External Activity: Visit to an international news agency or to a local newspaper or to a<br />

TV station or research in the website of Inter Press Service<br />

Required reading: van Ginneken’s chapters 6 and 7.<br />

Week 4<br />

Lecture: Samples of <strong>for</strong>eign reporting: subjects of the news; the concept of<br />

newsworthiness.<br />

Class Activity: Discussion on the international flow of news.<br />

Reporting / writing Assignment: Students will “cover” a local event and write a news<br />

story <strong>for</strong> an international medium.<br />

Required reading: Shoemaker and Cohen’s Chapters 2 and 7.<br />

Week 5<br />

Guest lecturer: an international <strong>for</strong>eign correspondent.<br />

Documentary: Press Pass to the World (2005). Director: Craig McCourry. Run time:<br />

83 min. Discussion on the perception of newsworthiness.<br />

Week 6<br />

Class Activity: Gathering in<strong>for</strong>mation 1: Finding international news sources<br />

Reporting/writing Assignment: Students will per<strong>for</strong>m research in 3 websites:<br />

Reporters Without Borders, Chatham House, and the International Journalists’<br />

Network.<br />

Required reading: Hannerz’s Chapter 7.<br />

Week 7<br />

Class Activity: Gathering in<strong>for</strong>mation 2: Conducting interviews <strong>for</strong> international news.<br />

External Activity: Students will interview a <strong>for</strong>eign reporter on a subject found in the<br />

websites.<br />

Required reading: Gwinn’s “A Deadly Call of the Wild”. Seattle Times, 4 April 1989.<br />

Week 8<br />

Class Activity: Discussion on international news reporting styles.<br />

Writing Assignment: Students will rewrite Gwinn’s account <strong>for</strong> the Seattle Times.<br />

Required reading: McGill (2005)’s article
