prepared to report on it to the class next week.<br />

Week 15<br />

Science and health literature as a source of in<strong>for</strong>mation: how to report academic<br />

papers presented at conferences and journal articles.<br />

Submit investigative story, with a list of sources.<br />

Assignment: Groups of students conduct a seminar in class on legal and ethical<br />

issues involved in science and health matters.<br />

Readings <strong>for</strong> next week: handouts on media law and ethics issues <strong>for</strong> science<br />

journalists.<br />

Second Semester<br />

Week <br />

Legal and ethical issues in science and health reporting: privacy; doctor/patient<br />

confidentiality; copyright; patent and other legal matters.<br />

Assignment: Students report on progress in their major story on a national science<br />

Alternative sources of healthcare: medicinal herbs, leaves and roots; synergy<br />

between alternative and orthodox medicine; quality control.<br />

people where you live.<br />
